Assignment 1-Unseen questions & written response

Due date  Tuesday, August 4th
Length     Approximately two hand written pages.
Place       CNU during final lecture time (2:45-3:30pm)

The purpose of this assessment is for students to demonstrate an understanding of the concepts contained in the pre-reading materials and covered in the intensive teaching week sessions. The aim of this assignment is to provide students with formative feedback about if their learning is "on the right track" and identify any misconceptions that need to be addressed.

Your Task: Write a response to the unseen questions provided to you based on your understanding of the pre-reading materials and intensive teaching week sessions. Preparation for this assignment is best achieved by ensuring that the ideas contained in the pre-reading materials are understood and that students attend and actively participate in all sessions.




Assignment 2 - Practical Workshop Tasks

Due date     Tuesday, August 4th
Length        Details will be provided during the workshops - see Workshops page
Place          CNU during your workshops in the intensive week
The purpose of this assignment is for students to demonstrate practical ability to use online tools.

Your task:  Demonstrate familiarity with the web 2.0 tools introduced during the workshop sessions during the intensive week.
Tools will be introduced in workshops and skills need to be demonstrated online and involve basic familiarity with a range of Web 2.0 tools. Full details will be provided on the web site and in workshops. Make sure you actively participate in all workshops



Assignment 3-PhotoStory Task

Due date  Tuesday, 25th August
Length     1-2 minutes

Receipt of the work will be acknowledged by email.

The purpose of this assignment is for students to demonstrate their practical ability to use digital tools to tell a story related to the topic. PhotoStory 3 and similar multimedia applications are particularly good for using images, sound and text to persuade people of a point of view, to affect their feelings.

Your task:  Use PhotoStory 3 or a similar application to create a short digital story that expresses a clear point of view about the potential of technology to transform student learning. Your story may be about just one aspect of technology and learning. It must be persuasive. Creative and original work will attract a higher grade.


Your digital story will be assessed according to how well it:

  • Is technically correct
  • Communicates effectively using images, text and voice, and possibly music and sound effects
  • Expresses an interesting and thoughtful viewpoint related to the topic
  • Is between 1-2 minutes duration

Assignment 4-Online Discussion

Due date  Tuesday, 8th September
Length     A minimum of 15 contributions
Place       Completed online at http://groups.google.com/group/beijing-talk?hl=en during and following the intensive teaching week.

The purpose of this assessment is for students to demonstrate their understandings of ICT in education by contributing to an online discussion.

Your task: Use the Groups discussion forum to contribute to online discussion about ICT in education. You need to respond to discussion topics begun by lecturing staff or students.
You may submit a proposed topic to John Travers by email - jtravers@gmail.com and he will give approval to post it (possibly with modifications). Credit will be given for starting a topic.


A good discussion forum has strong opinions, has lively debate, is informal, polite, builds on ideas of others and where possible, gives evidence to support opinions. Topics can be of any kind so long as they relate to the themes of the course.

Your online discussion contributions will be assessed according to how well they provide:

  • Significant* contributions to discussion
  • Build on or respond contributions of others
  • Make reference to readings or other evidence to support an opinion


*Significant comments are those that go into some depth. They inform, argue, question, or respond to the topic. They show a thoughtful understanding of issues related to ICT and education. Originality is valued highly.
Each contribution will be graded according to its quality. Contributions that are superficial and simple expression of opinion will not receive any marks. Fifteen good quality comments will receive a higher grading than 30 superficial ones.

 


Assignment 5-Essay

Due date Tuesday, 6th October
Length     2500 words
Place       Printed copy to CNU office.

The purpose of this assessment is for students to demonstrate broad understanding of the main issues of the course and to link these. Students must pass this assignment to be eligible to pass the topic overall.

 

Scenario:
You are an educational researcher and have received a letter from a school principal, director or manager requesting that you prepare a research report called "Investigation Project for ICT Development at ......" [insert the name of a institution - this can be fictitious or real].
Your report must provide detailed answers to the following questions:
  1. ICT development has had limited impact in education. What are the major reasons for this?
  2. What are the major potential benefits of ICT in education?
  3. What benefits do you see as being most useful for our institution?
  4. How should the development of ICT be undertaken in our institution?  (Outline a plan that describes who will do, what actions, with  what resources, when should this be done, where will it happen and how?
  5. What are the major difficulties that are experienced by institutions, particularly in China, attempting to use ICT to transform teaching and learning and how will these be addressed in your proposed development plan?

 

You MUST:

  • Use the numbered questions as sub-headings in your essay
  • Provide detailed answers to each question that are supported with referenced arguments from the topic core reading list. Reference as many of the core reading list articles as possible in appropriate ways but avoid using extensive quotes.
  • Reference all direct quotes with page numbers and avoid using secondary citations.

Your essay will be assessed according to how well it:

  • Realistically reviews the evidence for the use of ICT in learning
  • Shows an understanding of the problems faced in the use of ICT in educational systems, supported by evidence
  • Shows a realistic view of the complex challenges facing the institution
  • Realistically describes a range of appropriate strategies for implementation at the institution and,
  • Justifies their selection with referenced arguments from the Topic Core Reading List.


Submission of final written assignment (essay)
All assignments are to be submitted by the due date.
When submitting your final written assignment, it is important to:

  • number the pages and staple them together. Do not use pins or paper clips as these catch on other assignments in the sorting and mailing process, and your assignment could be lost.
  • attach an Assignment cover sheet, completed in full, to the front of each of your assignments. Make sure you include your ID number and the name of your tutor. (cover sheets are available electronically at: www.flinders.edu.au/education/students/current/ )
  • Assignments that are mailed must be postmarked on or before the due date.
  • Keep a copy of your assignment.
