  • paradigm - a general view of how the world works, sometimes thought of as common sense; a paradigm shift is when people recognise that new data does not fit the new paradigm and adopt a new paradigm.
  • transforming  to change in a major way, into a different system or nature
  • conservative tending to continue traditional practices, avoids radical change
  • radical change major reorganisation, a break with the past - a paradigm shift?
  • constructivism "...the learner is active in the process of taking in information and building knowledge and understanding; in other words, of constructing their own learning." SACSA.
  • pedagogy teaching approach
  • didactic instruction, traditional direct teaching
  • defining has the power to define, sets the environment
  • explicit and tacit knowledge explicit - the facts and concepts, tacit - the understanding the processes in the field, personal knowledge, being encultured (understanding the culture of the group or society)

    • bandwidth measurement of Internet access speed
    • kilobyte (kb) a smallest measurement of file size,
    • Megabyte (Mb) a measurement of file size, equals 1,000 kb, size of a typical digital photo
    • Gigabyte (Gb) measurement of file size, equals 1,000 Mb, typical hard drive is 40-80 Gb
    • Document types
      • html and htm - web format documents
      • pdf - Adobe Acrobat portable document format - the 'standard' for ready to print documents on the web: can be written with Acrobat Writer
      • jpg - common compressed image format good for photos on web
      • gif - best web format for diagrams and drawings
      • tiff - high quality (and large) image form
    • Hard disk/Hard drive :This is a magnetic disk where the computer stores and retrieves data.
    • Hardware: The parts of a computer system you can see or touch.
    • Icon :These are symbols displayed on a screen. The icons on a toolbar are used to do things like open or save a file.
    • Network : A group of computers linked up so that they can communicate with each other and share a Server.
    • Operating system : This is the software which allows the hardware and programs to work. In school we use the 'Windows' operating system.
    • RAM : Random Access Memory.
    • Software : the programs used to operate a computer.
    • Internet : A global telecommunications network enabling computers around the world to share information.
    • Intranet : Similar to the Internet, but restricted within an organisation, e.g. a school or local authority. Most Intranets contain gateways to the wider Internet.
    • Multimedia : Information consisting of text, graphics, sound and moving video.
    • Download : the process of tranferring a copy of an electronic file from a remote computer to the requesting computer by means of a modem or network.
    • Driver : a program that control a device like printer, disk drive.
    • ADSL : (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) A high speed technology that allows a large of volumes of data to be sent over a telephone line. ADSL allows rates of 1.5 to 9 Mbps when receiving data and from 16 to 640 Kbps when sending data.
    • Anti Virus Software : software installed on a computer that scans and protects files from computer viruses.
    • Attachment: Any files that is attached to an email message.
    • Broadband: broadband provides high speed of internet access by delivering multiple channels of data (such as data/voice/video)over a single communication medium.
    • Cache : a special computer data storage area (memory or disk) where frequently used data values are duplicated for quick access.
    • Compatibility: a situation whereby different pieces of equipment and/or software are capable of being used together without special modification or adaptation.
    • Compression: the process of storing data in a way that requires less storage space.
    • Firewall: a system designed to prevent unauthorised access to or from a private network.
    • LCD :Liquid Crystal display.
    • Access provider: The company that provides you with Internet access and, in some cases, an online account on their computer system
    • Active Window:The top or front window in a multiple window environment.
    • Anonymous Login Convention (FTP): Standard username (anonymous) and password (guest) which allows login within FTP for the purpose of retrieving an unprotected file.
    • Bit-map : Generally used to describe an illustration or font file as being created by a predefined number of pixels.
    • Booting :Starting up a computer via the power switch, which loads the system software into memory. Restarting the computer via a keystroke combination is called rebooting or a warm boot.
    • CPU : Central Processing Unit; the brains of the computer. The CPU interprets and executes the actual computing tasks.
    • Dial up connection Internet connection by phone line - generally 56kb/sec
    • Broadband: higher speed connection, ADSL or cable from 256kb to thousands
    • Podcasts: the distribution of audio files by registering a subscription.The file is then downloaded automatically and then transferred to an iPod or other MP3 player. Like radio on demand.
