paradigm - a general view of how the world works, sometimes thought of as common sense; a paradigm shift is when people recognise that new data does not fit the new paradigm and adopt a new paradigm.
transforming to change in a major way, into a different system or nature
conservative tending to continue traditional practices, avoids radical change
radical change major reorganisation, a break with the past - a paradigm shift?
constructivism "...the learner is active in the process of taking in information and building knowledge and understanding; in other words, of constructing their own learning." SACSA.
pedagogy teaching approach
didactic instruction, traditional direct teaching
defining has the power to define, sets the environment
explicit and tacit knowledge explicit - the facts and concepts, tacit - the understanding the processes in the field, personal knowledge, being encultured (understanding the culture of the group or society)
holism seeing things as a whole rather than as separate parts, in education, avoiding subject separation
methodology (teaching) the method or approach to teaching, teaching technique
engagement students are are actively engaged, doing something in their learning
interactive acting on each other, responding to user inputs
sustainable change change that will remain, is self supporting by other factors
infrastructure (ICT) the combination of physical systems - computers, network, printers, servers, cabling, etc
interactive (ICT) software that responds to the user's inputs and choices
context the setting in which event occurs, the factors that influence events
Computer Language
- bandwidth measurement of Internet access speed
- kilobyte (kb) a smallest measurement of file size,
- Megabyte (Mb) a measurement of file size, equals 1,000 kb, size of a typical digital photo
- Gigabyte (Gb) measurement of file size, equals 1,000 Mb, typical hard drive is 40-80 Gb
- Document types
- html and htm - web format documents
- pdf - Adobe Acrobat portable document format - the 'standard' for ready to print documents on the web: can be written with Acrobat Writer
- jpg - common compressed image format good for photos on web
- gif - best web format for diagrams and drawings
- tiff - high quality (and large) image form
- Hard disk/Hard drive :This is a magnetic disk where the computer stores and retrieves data.
- Hardware: The parts of a computer system you can see or touch.
- Icon :These are symbols displayed on a screen. The icons on a toolbar are used to do things like open or save a file.
- Network : A group of computers linked up so that they can communicate with each other and share a Server.
- Operating system : This is the software which allows the hardware and programs to work. In school we use the 'Windows' operating system.
- RAM : Random Access Memory.
- Software : the programs used to operate a computer.
- Internet : A global telecommunications network enabling computers around the world to share information.
- Intranet : Similar to the Internet, but restricted within an organisation, e.g. a school or local authority. Most Intranets contain gateways to the wider Internet.
- Multimedia : Information consisting of text, graphics, sound and moving video.
- Download : the process of tranferring a copy of an electronic file from a remote computer to the requesting computer by means of a modem or network.
- Driver : a program that control a device like printer, disk drive.
- ADSL : (Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line) A high speed technology that allows a large of volumes of data to be sent over a telephone line. ADSL allows rates of 1.5 to 9 Mbps when receiving data and from 16 to 640 Kbps when sending data.
- Anti Virus Software : software installed on a computer that scans and protects files from computer viruses.
- Attachment: Any files that is attached to an email message.
- Broadband: broadband provides high speed of internet access by delivering multiple channels of data (such as data/voice/video)over a single communication medium.
- Cache : a special computer data storage area (memory or disk) where frequently used data values are duplicated for quick access.
- Compatibility: a situation whereby different pieces of equipment and/or software are capable of being used together without special modification or adaptation.
- Compression: the process of storing data in a way that requires less storage space.
- Firewall: a system designed to prevent unauthorised access to or from a private network.
- LCD :Liquid Crystal display.
- Access provider: The company that provides you with Internet access and, in some cases, an online account on their computer system
- Active Window:The top or front window in a multiple window environment.
- Anonymous Login Convention (FTP): Standard username (anonymous) and password (guest) which allows login within FTP for the purpose of retrieving an unprotected file.
- Bit-map : Generally used to describe an illustration or font file as being created by a predefined number of pixels.
- Booting :Starting up a computer via the power switch, which loads the system software into memory. Restarting the computer via a keystroke combination is called rebooting or a warm boot.
- CPU : Central Processing Unit; the brains of the computer. The CPU interprets and executes the actual computing tasks.
- Dial up connection Internet connection by phone line - generally 56kb/sec
- Broadband: higher speed connection, ADSL or cable from 256kb to thousands
- Podcasts: the distribution of audio files by registering a subscription. The file is then downloaded automatically and then transferred to an iPod or other MP3 player. Like radio on demand.
