Integrated Learning Plan

Back to Units of Work

Bel pic.jpgMy name is Belinda Schmitt and I am currently studying a Bachelor of Education (Primary/ Junior Primary), due to complete my studies in June 2009. I have previously completed a Bachelor of International Business, majoring in Japanese.

On completion of my education degree, I hope to become a language teacher where I can pass on my love and passion for the Japanese language and culture. I hope to make language learning meaningful and motivating for students and abolish the common misconception that languages are less-important than other learning areas.  Living in such a multicultural society as Australia, learning a second language is crucial for students to develop respect and curiosity for other languages and cultures.

This unit is an inquiry into the part that clothing plays in culture and is designed for a Year 4 class. It allows students to look into the similarities and differences between clothing worn in Australia and Japan and also inquire further into the role that the Kimono plays in Japanese culture. Students also have opportunities to develop their Japanese communication skills, with all areas of communication (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) being covered.

Rationale

I have chosen to base this inquiry on the role of clothing in culture, as clothing plays such an important part in the Japanese culture.

In Japan, the Kimono continues to signify the Japanese culture, as it represents such a long and valued history.  Japanese people continue to wear the Kimono even in today’s westernised society, as they want to continue their traditions and culture.

I also hope to break down any stereotypes that students may have, such as the idea that all Japanese people wear Kimonos all of the time. Students will inquire into the similarities between the Japanese and Australian cultures as well as the differences. It will show how there are similarities amongst cultures, for example, the every-day clothes that we wear, however the differences, such as traditional clothing, play such an important part in signifying and defining our cultures.
