Introduction

me.jpg

My name is Lukas Civetta and I am currently finishing my third year of the Bachelor of   Education (MSc)/ Bachelor of Science. For the science component of my degree I am majoring in Biology with a minor in Computer Science.

My unit of enquiry for year 6/7 students in the subject area of science is ‘Why is there life on Earth and not other planets?’. By choosing this subject students will be able to explore the solar system and universe, and gain an understanding of the key elements that sustain life on Earth by comparing Earth with the other Solar System planets.

Rationale

I chose this unit of inquiry because ‘Space’ is a topic which students generally find stimulating.Zappy.jpg
Also, understanding the basic elements of Earth that are required to support life acts as a platform for further topics on the impact of humans on the natural environment and sustainability of Earth, which are highly relevant in today’s society.
Additionally, with 2009 being International Year of Astronomy, I thought it would be a good time to explore some of the mysteries of space!
Finally, I love Futurama, and will work it into curriculum whenever I can!!

This unit will also allow students to explore their imagination and creativity in addition to demonstrating scientific enquiry and problem solving, through use of an assessment task where they have to design their own planet, and explain what life would be like to live on that planet (Or why life could not be maintained).
