Back to units of work

My name is Gordon Steele and I am coming to the end of

the Bachelor of Education Studies (junior primary/primary)

degree at Flinders University.I have been studying for two

years as I am a graduate entry student.  Previously I have

completed a couple of degrees, one in history one in

hospitality managment.

My unit of inquiry is aimed at year seven students in the subject area of science.  I decided upon this as on my final practicum I was with a reception class and it is in this context that I have done most of my planning throughout this course, I felt it would be good to focus on the other end of the primary school.  Also I felt that science is the subject area with which I felt least comfortable after completing the curicullum subjects over the last two years.

The subject of my unit is:  How does our energy use effect our environment?

I chose this as I think that in Australia this is a very topical subject.  The need to educate everyone in this country about energy use and conservation is vitally important for the future of the planet and this needs to start in the school.  Throughout the unit students will focus on different sources of energy, both renewable and non renewable, and consider their importance to our society and their impact on the environment.  They will take part in a class project in which they will discuss different options for dealing with increased energy costs for the school, this is intended to enable students to make real connections with the subject matter and the world outside the classroom.  This is vitally important as quality education needs to be connected to the students' wider lives and communities.

This unit of inquiry also covers both science SACSA outcomes at standard 4 in the strand Energy Systems.  As such it would contribute to the coverage of the required curriculum.
