My name is Melissa Snowdon and I am studying a double degree of Bachelor of Education (jp/p)/ Bachelor of Arts. I am majoring in Australian Studies and I minored in Physical Education. I am in the third year of my four year course and I am taking this topic as an Education elective.

How can we keep ourselves and

 others safe on the road?

Overview/Rationale

We chose this topic because it is important for students to understand how to keep themselves and others safe. Most children spend a great deal of their time on or near roads which means they encounter the potential hazards posed by them almost everyday.

The unit is aimed at year four students and it begins by looking at the road rules/guidelines that are relevant to them. This gives the students the background knowledge they will need to plan and practice strategies to help keep themselves and others safe. They will then examine why the community puts such rules in place and why it is important to follow them. After this the students will look at what community initiatives are already in place to encourage safe road practices. Finally the students will complete the topic by looking at what strategies they can implement to help keep themselves and others safe.
