Will mining play a big part in our future?
Brief Outline of Inquiry unit. This inquiry unit has been planned for years 8 - 10 in science classrooms.this inquiry unit focuses on the current mining boom that is happening in Australian for the last couple of years and talks about how will mining play a big part in our future. During this topic students are asked to research mining history in one of Australia's states/territories and to make a Ed. voicethread that reflects and mentions things they have learnt.
Rationale.
I chose to make this inquiry unit over the three years of early high school, because this topic depending on what science textbooks you have in your schools has it a different year levels. I chose to do this inquiry unit on mining because of the publicity the mining industry has had these last few years. Many students in your schools could have families away from home and working in a mine because they may not be many other jobs around (especially in country areas). So students may know a bit about it but not what really goes on and how mining can affect our future. By looking at mining’s history in Australia and learning how things have changed from there, we can use this knowledge to look to the future and get some idea of what might happen. This inquiry unit was designed by using both Kath Murdoch’s integrated inquiry planning model and Wiggins & McTighe’s (2006) ‘Backwards by Design’ approach. Also Lockleys North Primary School’s Collaborative Planning Proforma (version 2) was used to help me set out this unit.
