I had no idea what question I would pose for this assignment and so looked at the template for Lockleys North Primary School and found a topic on plants, but I was already doing an assignment on plants (in Science) and wanted some variety so changed the topic to animals.
2010 is the International Year of Biodiversity and 2011 is the International Year of Forests, and as I will be out on prac in 2010 or (hopefully) teaching in 2011 I thought that a topic on threatened species could be applicable to both and is a unit I may use in the future (with relevant modifications). If species continue to become extinct there will be a less diversity within the world which will dramatically change the way that life in some places occur (food webs/predator and prey/biomass....) Threatened species live in all habitats, so for use in 2011, I could modify the topic slightly so that the focus is on forest species or keep it open so that students do not become disengaged with the theme.
There are many links between this topic and the SACSA framework, and despite the possibility of students already having looked at threatened species in earlier years (Julia's year 1 daughter is learning about them at present, and Amy and Julia are planing a topic for younger students) I decided that this would still be a suitable topic because rather than focusing threatened species, this topic looks as the reasons why they are threatened. If threatened species has already been covered, the topic is still valuable because it looks at them in a slightly different way and students can develop a deeper understanding.
This topic allows students to recognize the range of factors that lead to species becoming threatened which can apply to all species. They are given the opportunity to investigate a program that aims to keep the species alive and use all the knowledge they have gained throughout the topic to determine whether a recently found species is threatened and what needs to happen to ensure its survival.
I am assuming that the school is well equipped with ICT and that students in my class have had experience working with Audacity and Wiki's (Wikispaces) earlier in the year and students have a good understanding of computing. I am also assuming that the school is near enough to the Adelaide Zoological Gardens to go on a day excursion.
