How does the Solar System effect me?

Back to Inquiry Units

Earth Moon Banner 665x115.jpg

Rationale

This unit of work on the Solar System is designed for Year 5 students. We chose this topic because 2009 is the year of Astronomy.  Exploring the Solar System is well suited to hands on activities, ICT tools and can be integrated across the curriculum. Students can ask themselves 'How do I fit into the Universe?', 'How have past generations explained the night sky, the lunar cycle and eclipses?'

Stage 1 - Identifying Desired Results

Stage 2 - Evidence and Assessment Tasks

Stage 3The Learning Plan

Stage 4a - Lesson Plan 1

Stage 4b - Lesson Plan 2

The Inquiry Overview

Through the subjects of Science, Mathematics and SOSE, students will develop an understanding of how many aspects of life on Earth are determined by the solar system.  This unit allows students to inquire into the facts and knowledge about our solar system.  With this knowledge they can develop an understanding of how different cultures, lifestyles and agriculture develop.  Students will develop skills to investigate critically and analytically, and research to find their own path to culture.

 About the Authors

My name is Lisa Herbst and I am studying my final year of a Bachelor of Education (Junior Primary/Primary). I will complete the course in November 2009. I have previously completed a Bachelor of Science majoring in Physiology and Pharmacology.

I decided to become a teacher after working with Primary School students in the Learning Assistance Program (LAP). This was very rewarding and highlighted the need for a more wholistic approach to the needs of some students. As a mature Graduate Entry student, I take many life experiences into the Primary School classroom and staffroom, with a love of teaching, learning and fun, for both myself and the students.

My name is Michelle Lee and I am in my 4th year of a Bachelor of Education (Junior Primary/Primary)/Bachelor of Science (with a Biology major and Chemistry minor) degree.  I would love to teach Junior Primary classes (Reception to Year 3) and I would also be keen to teach as a specialist Science teacher.

I decided to embark on a career in teaching as it seemed a natural progression for me from my work as a school services officer and I find spending time with students to be highly rewarding and worthwhile.  I aim to create an interactive, hands-on, safe and fun learning environment where my students can believe in themselves and become successful, lifelong learners.

IMG_0418.jpg My name is Sarah Dingle and I am about to complete the third year of my Bachelor of Education/Bachelor of Arts degree. I would like to be a Junior Primary/Primary Visual Arts/Music teacher in the future. I have also worked in Out of School Hours Care for 5 years and studied Audio Engineering.
