Hi, My name is Linda Ollin. I am a 4th year student who is currently completing a double degree in Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education (Junior Primary/Primary). For my Bachelor of Arts my major sequence is Environmental Studies and minor sequence in Visual Arts.
A unit of inquiry designed by Linda Ollin. Year Level: 4/5Context: The unit of inquiry focuses on climate change in Australia and the interaction between natural and built environments. The students will use problem solving skills to invent a product that will provide sustainability socially and environmentally. Students will discover that our actions can cause environmental impacts, but can also be a part of the solution. This task also requires students to work collaboratively in groups, use a variety of ICT tools and problem solve through research and critical thinking. Reason's: Our climate is starting to change! So the students are going to inquire into the affects Australians may face in the future. At present this topic is a world wide concern and is not solved easily. Therefore this topic will be of much interest for years to come. It is important for today's youth to recognise the interaction between natural and built environments/systems and to critical analyse information. They need these skills so that society can make informed decisions to solve environmental problems and create sustainability in the future, not only in Australia, but world wide. This unit can extend on What happens next? (yr 4/5) or How does it work? ( 3/4) where the students learn how the world works. In How does it work? the students look at machines and simple circuits. They can apply this knowledge to designing their product. In What happens next? The students look at matter and how it changes. This information could be in corporate into this unit when looking at climate change effects.
