Getting started with Google

You need a Google Account to be able to use Google Groups and Sites (and many others).

1. When you go to the link on the web site home page to Google Groups - Beijing Talk, you see a link to create your Google Account.

Click Create an account now.

2. You can use an email account you already have.

If you already have a Gmail account, you already have a Google account. Just use this to login to Groups and all the other Apps. If you want to start use Gmail (below) you can go to your Google account settings later and change your email login to your Gmail address.

Complete the personal information. It is important for this topic that you use your FAN ID from Flinders in your Nickname (casual name). This makes it easy for us to identify each of the 60 students. If you do not use your FAN you will not get marks for your work.

See the example below.

4. When you have created your Google Account, you will see the Beijing Talk Invitation page. You must ask to join the group, and answer a question (to make sure strangers don't join the group).

Notice how John's Nickname is written, so it is very clear what his ID is.

You will receive an reply from John to accept your membership of the Beijing Talk group.

Then, join the discussions!

Part 2 Joining Sites

You can find Sites by going to the Home page and clicking on the Sites link to John's site, follow the link there.

Or, you can go to any Google page and at the top in the 'more' section, you will find a link to Sites.

When you join Sites, you click Create new Site, and this is the screen to add its details.

Choose a site name that is based on your name. You will make other sites later and these can have whatever name you like, but this is your Home site, so should be easy for people who know you to remeber it.

For Collaborating, set it at "Only people I specify.

For viewing, set it at "anyone in the world". You can change it later if you like, but for now, we want all students to be able to view each other's site.

Important: Email john at jtravers@gmail.com and tell him the name of your site (not the whole address, just the actual name (like jtravers)

He will add it to the Student Sites list on his site.
