Integrated Learning Plan

How was nature used in traditional Indigenous Australian life? aboriginal_art.jpg
Integrated Unit
SACSA Learning Band – Middle Years
Subjects: SOSE, English and ICT
Year Levels – 8
Unit Length – 10 weeks

The Inquiry Unit

This unit will focus on the way that nature was used in traditional Indigenous Australian culture and is designed for a year 8 class. It integrates the subjects of SOSE, English and ICT. It allows students to explore the different ways that the land was used as a means of survival in traditional Indigenous life and about Indigenous culture in general. In doing so, students will be able to develop an understanding into the ways that different cultures function as well as develop a deeper understanding regarding the detrimental impact that white settlement had on Indigenous way of life.

Rationale

I have chosen to base my inquiry on the role that nature played in traditional Indigenous society because I believe that it is extremely important for students to understand how the original inhabitants of our country lived.

Indigenous people have a strong connection to the land and my unit aims to not only explore this but also help students understand the degree to which white settlement impacted on their way of life. My unit aims to help students develop an understanding into the different ways that different cultures function and also aims to break down any negative associations that may be held with Indigenous people and their culture.

My Integrated Learning Plan has been divided into four sections and can be accessed by clicking on the following links:

Stage 1: Unit Overview and Desired Results
