Why Are Volcanoes Important To The Environment?

Back to inquiry units home page

me.jpgHello,

My name is James Martin and I am currently in my final year at Flinders University where I have been studying JP/P Teaching. Over the course of my degree I have tried to focus on learning as much as I can about teaching and learning with computers as well as making my self familiar with the many different learning styles of children today. I also have a passion for teaching in unconventional ways and trying my best to make all of my lessons as fun as possible for all of my students.

Integrated Unit Plan

Why Are Volcanoes Important To The Environment?

volcano.jpg

This unit is an inquiry into the role that volcanoes play in maintaining the global ecosystem and is designed for a year 4/5 class. In this unit students will learn about how volcanoes play a crucial role in keeping the Earths climate the way it is. They will also learn about how volcanoes can have both a positive and negative effect on the local and global environments.

Rationale:

With the subject of global warming dominating the news headlines in modern times I think it is important that students are aware of and understand that the global ecosystem and the environment is controlled by more then just carbon emissions and the Ozone layer. It is important that they understand that the Earth has its own ways of controlling the climate and that they have been around for a lot longer then human caused pollution. This unit of inquiry aims to have students understand that volcanoes both on land and underwater have an significant effect on the Earths ecosystem and the environment and that they understand the concepts behind why this is so.

This unit plan has been divided into 4 sections and can be accessed as read only Google Docs.

Stage 1: Unit overview and desired results

Stage 2: Acceptable evidence of knowledge

Stage 3: The learning plan

Stage 4A: Individual lesson plan incorporating a learning object from The Learning Federation

Stage 4B: Individual lesson plan incorporating an ICT tool
